Device-related infections are rampant in our nation s hospitals. Vascular access devices, ventilator equipment and urinary drainage catheters, while offering immense benefit, also entail certain risk. The risk is that bacteria will adhere to these devices, forming a protective biofilm, which over time can seed the bloodstream, pulmonary tree and urinary tract. What strategies are CDC, APIC, INS and other organizations now calling for to prevent these infections?
